Consistency of the Maximum Product of Spacings Method and Estimation of a Unimodal Distribution

چکیده
The first part of this paper gives some general consistency theorems for the maximum product of spacings (MPS) method, an estimation method related to maximum likelihood. The second part deals with nonparametric estimation of a concave (convex) distribution and more generally a unimodal distribution, without smoothness assumptions on the densities. The MPS estimator for a distribution function with a monotone density is shown to have a simple explicit representation analogous to the Grenander estimator, and is asymptotically minimax with respect to Kolmogorov-Smirnov type loss. A simple consistent MPS estimator for a unimodal distribution is also discussed.

Evaluation of estimation methods for parameters of the probability functions in tree diameter distribution modeling
One of the most commonly used statistical models for characterizing the variations of tree diameter at breast height is Weibull distribution. The usual approach for estimating parameters of a statistical model is the maximum likelihood estimation (likelihood method). Usually, this works based on iterative algorithms such as Newton-Raphson. However, the efficiency of the likelihood method is not...
متن کاملDifferent Estimation Procedures for the Parameters of the Extended Exponential Geometric Distribution for Medical Data
We have considered different estimation procedures for the unknown parameters of the extended exponential geometric distribution. We introduce different types of estimators such as the maximum likelihood, method of moments, modified moments, L-moments, ordinary and weighted least squares, percentile, maximum product of spacings, and minimum distance estimators. The different estimators are comp...
متن کاملThe generalized weighted Lindley distribution: Properties, estimation and applications
Abstract: In this study, a three-parameter lifetime distribution namely generalized weighted Lindley (GLW) distribution is proposed. The GLW distribution is an useful generalization of the weighted Lindley distribution which accommodates increasing, decreasing, decreasing-increasing-decreasing, bathtub, and unimodal hazard rate making it a flexible model for reliable data. A significant account...
متن کاملOn a New Bimodal Normal Family
The unimodal distributions are frequently used in the theorical statistical studies. But in applied statistics, there are many situations in which the unimodal distributions can not be fitted to the data. For example, the distribution of the data outside the control zone in quality control or outlier observations in linear models and time series may require to be a bimodal. These situations, oc...
متن کاملConsistency of Genera lized Maximum Spacing Estimates
General methods for the estimation of distributions can be derived from approx imations of certain information measures. For example, both the maximum like lihood (ML) method and the maximum spacing (MSP) method can be obtained from approximations of t he Kuliback-Leibler information. The ideas behind the MSP method, whereby an estimation method for continuous univariate distri butions is ob...
